Does This Sound Familiar?

Imagine someone we’ll call Michael.

Michael first noticed the ringing one evening when the house was quiet. At first, he thought it would go away. It didn’t. Soon, he was noticing it at work, while driving and especially when trying to fall asleep. The more he listened for it, the more intrusive it seemed to become.

He searched online for answers. One website told him there was no cure. Another suggested supplements. Friends told him to ignore it. His hearing had never seemed like a major problem, so he wasn’t even sure whether an audiologist was the right person to see.

“Can someone help me understand why this is happening — and what I can actually do about it?”

This is where many people are when they first contact our clinic.

Tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss and many other factors, and its impact can be different for every person. A thorough assessment helps us understand your individual hearing and tinnitus profile and determine what management options may be appropriate for you.

You don’t have to figure out your next step alone. Our complimentary Tinnitus Clarity Call is an opportunity to speak with our team, tell us what you’ve been experiencing and learn whether a tinnitus assessment at Salus Hearing & Tinnitus Centre may be an appropriate next step.

Michael is a fictional name and this scenario is illustrative of concerns commonly reported by people seeking help for tinnitus. It is not a patient testimonial and does not represent the experience or treatment outcome of any specific individual.

BUT MY HEARING IS FINE…

Why We Look Beyond
a Standard Hearing Test

You may hear well enough to carry on conversations, watch television and talk on the phone — and still have changes in your hearing that aren’t detected by a routine hearing test.

Hearing changes often begin in the higher frequencies and can go unnoticed. Reduced input from the inner ear may contribute to changes in how the brain processes sound and can play a role in tinnitus for some people.

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?

Hearing Loss and Tinnitus Are Often Connected

Glossy Pink Cochlea Inner Ear Anatomy

Research shows that tinnitus is frequently associated with hearing loss, even when conventional hearing tests are normal.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that people with tinnitus who had normal conventional hearing tests still had significantly poorer extended-high-frequency hearing thresholds than people without tinnitus.1

A 2022 meta-analysis of 27 studies involving 1,400 participants found reductions in tinnitus loudness and distress following hearing-aid amplification, with better outcomes when the amplification was objectively verified.2

These findings support the importance of a comprehensive hearing assessment — including extended high-frequency testing — to look for hearing changes that may be contributing to your tinnitus. If hearing loss is identified, appropriately fitted hearing aids may be an important part of your tinnitus-management plan.
