What services do you currently offer?
We offer full hearing assessments of the outer, middle and inner ear for individuals of ALL AGE.
We assess and treat hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis.
We make custom ear plugs for noise, sleep and swimming as well.
We educate our patients on assistive listening and alerting devices and hearing aid accessories.
When should I refer a patient for a hearing assessment?
All children should have a hearing test before starting junior kindergarten to ensure there are no barriers to learning. Thereafter, a hearing test is recommended every 5 years until the age of 60 where it should increase to every 3 years. If a patient raises concerns about their hearing or their family member complains about issues hearing it’s likely time for a hearing assessment. Is there a charge for a hearing assessment?
A hearing screening is complimentary and determines if a patient can hear four of the six speech frequencies within the normal range. If they fail the hearing screening a comprehensive assessment will be recommended. There is a fee for a full assessment. A full assessment includes hearing thresholds for all six speech frequencies to determine the severity of the hearing loss, bone conduction thresholds to determine the location of the hearing loss along the auditory pathway, and speech audiometry to determine if they are a good candidate for amplification, if warranted. Impressions and recommendations will be indicated in the report. A copy of the report will be mailed to the patient and if consent is provided, a copy will be faxed to the referring physician as well.
How much do hearing aids cost?
Hearing aids vary in price depending on the level of technology. The most advanced hearing aids can cost between $3,000-4,000 per hearing aid. The most basic hearing aids can cost between $750-1,200 per hearing aid. The price includes a service plan for three years and will include repair and loss and damage warranty. The hearing aids should support a person’s hearing needs for at least 5 years.
Is there funding for hearing aids?
If your patient is a resident of Ontario they will have access to funding through the Assistive Devices Program every 5 years. If they are working, they may also have private insurance coverage for hearing aids. There are a number of programs that also pay for hearing aids including VAC, WSIB, ODSP, and Ontario Works. We will be able to determine if a patient qualifies for any of these programs and assist them with the process.
